When water droughts hit manufacturing plants which require water as part of their processing, they are faced with serious issues.

Most water authorities in the UK put pressure on businesses to find alternative sources to traditional towns mains.

To find a solution, the client called on the expertise of AFS.

The clients site made is up of a number of individual plants each with their own evaporative cooling tower. AFS needed to devise an effective method of utilising river water, which is in abundance near the clients site, as an alternative to the towns’ mains supply.

Solution:

Using river water as a source for large scale cooling towers is not normally a viable option due to contamination, but AFS found a solution.

AFS devised a complex but efficient self cleaning, automatic water filtering system which purified the river water down to 15 micron with up to 90% efficiency.

The system was demonstrated on a plant that typically used up to 30 cubic meters of water per hour. The resulting cost reduction delivered by switching from towns’ water to river water as a source for the plant was 90%, saving them over £200,000 per year. Payback on the deployed systems was achieved in less than 18 months.

As soon as it became clear how effective this solutions was the client asked AFS to roll this solution out to the remaining plants on-site.
